ACTION LETTER: Stop Online Spying Bill #C30
click title to read more.
Here's how you can respond:
Subject: Examination of Bill C-30
Dear Chair, Vice Chairs, and Members of the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security:
Like so many Canadians, I am worried about the overreaching nature of Bill C-30 as it is currently drafted. I feel that proper study of the Bill must consider:
The notion that current investigative powers of law enforcement are insufficient. In my view, law enforcement must provide compelling evidence that this is so.
The warrantless disclosure of ISP/telecom customer information. This strikes at a bedrock principle of privacy law and is rightly opposed by the privacy and civil society community.
The possibility that police might bypass new reporting requirements in relation to disclosed subscriber information. The legislation must ensure that all ISP/telecom disclosures are logged and reported.
Section 23 of the Bill, which imposes a gag order on Internet providers, preventing them from informing affected subscribers of disclosures of information. This provision is undemocratic, and must be removed from the bill.
Section 487.0195 of the Bill, which grants ISP/telecoms full criminal and civil immunity for warrantless disclosure of information. ISP/telecoms must not be allowed to and encouraged to comply with warrantless data preservation and production.
Section 14 of the Bill, which gives government an array of powers to order ISP/telecoms to install surveillance equipment to allow for more simultaneous interceptions than is otherwise specified in the law; to comply with additional confidentiality requirements not otherwise specified in the law; to meet additional operational requirements not otherwise specified in the law; to install surveillance equipment provided by the Minister. These provisions to circumvent limitations in the law, and determine not only surveillance capabilities but the surveillance equipment itself, must be dropped.
The ISP/telecom regulatory framework. Capability requirements, requirements for ISP/telecoms to assist with testing surveillance capabilities, requirements for them to disclose the names of all employees who may be involved in interceptions, reporting requirements in relation to technical capabilities, and the draconian inspection powers of Section 34 must be closely examined and found justifiable before this proposed legislation is passed.
Oversight of lawful access. The government should follow the advice of Ontario Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian by establishing an independent agency devoted to surveillance oversight.
Limits of the law. The law must be limited in its application to serious crime only, and limited in its use to law enforcement officials dealing with serious criminal matters.
The cost of lawful access. Before proceeding with the legislation, Canadians are entitled to a detailed, independent regulatory impact assessment that provides a realistic analysis of the costs created by Bill C-30 for implementation of surveillance technologies, operational costs, and resources needed for oversight.
Section 64, which makes it clear that future regulations relating to implementation of the bill will be required. The public is entitled to see all the regulations before the bill is passed, and all the regulations must be reviewed by and voted upon by the House of Commons.
Privacy laws. Given the close correlation between privacy and security, the government should commit to moving forward with reforms to the private sector privacy law (PIPEDA) in conjunction with lawful access.
Canada’s commitments in the Beyond the Border Action plan around information sharing. There is the potential that information gathered will be information shared with any U.S. police department or security agency making a request. Bringing Canada’s policies in line with U.S. policing norms without putting in place checks and balances on when and how much information is shared with other countries goes against a fundamental recommendation of the Arar Commissioner. This cannot be allowed to happen.
Thank you for your attention to these very serious concerns.
Sincerely,
Name, Address, Postal Code

Harper DEMANDS even more secrecy! Worried yet? YOU SHOULD BE!
As the official newspaper of the Government of Canada published since 1841, the Canada Gazette is one of the vehicles that Canadians can use to access the laws and regulations that govern their daily lives.
Government departments and agencies as well as stakeholders from the private sector are required by law, to publish certain information in the Canada Gazette. The official newspaper is published under the authority of the Statutory Instruments Act and of the Statutory Instruments Regulations.
The Canada Gazette contains formal public notices, official appointments, proposed regulations, regulations and public Acts of Parliament from government departments and agencies. It also contains miscellaneous public notices from the private sector.
Harper is ending the requirement to publish with C-38. This affords them the opportunity to work in secret. Worried?? If not, you should be.
Tell people. Tell CARP. Tell Opposition MPs. Tell everywhere you can. Who wants a secret Canadian government???? Is this what our troops fought and died for? Is this what we want to leave our children and grandchildren?
TELL and keep TELLING.. YELL IT from the rooftops!!!

Frogs
We were up Iron Mountain, near Merritt, British Columbia and visited one of our favorite lakes. To our surprise, we were greeted by frogs! They were amazing!!
Frogs are amphibians in the order Anura.
Frogs are widely known as exceptional jumpers, and many of the anatomical characteristics of frogs, particularly their long, powerful legs, are adaptations to improve jumping performance.
Due to their permeable skin, frogs are often semi-aquatic or inhabit humid areas, but move easily on land. They typically lay their eggs in puddles, ponds or lakes, and their larvae, called tadpoles, have gills and tails to develop in water. Adult frogs follow a carnivorous diet, mostly of arthropods, annelids and gastropods. Frogs are most noticeable by their call, which can be widely heard during the night or day, mainly in their mating season.
The distribution of frogs ranges from tropic to subarctic regions, but most species are found in tropical rainforests. Consisting of more than 5,000 species described, they are among the most diverse groups of vertebrates. However, populations of certain frog species are declining significantly.

Subject: Elections Canada and its investigation
Importance: High
May 16, 2012
Dear Opposition leaders:
I wasn't aware until today that Elections Canada has not issued a production order to legally compel the Conservative Party to hand over relevant records and is instead relying on voluntary disclosure. http://bit.ly/JLmfRw
What we know about the Conservative Party is that disclosure, even necessary disclosure as in the instance of the F-35 procurement or the costs of Bill C-10, is not its strong point.
What we know about Elections Canada is that the Chief Electoral Officer was hand-picked and appointed by Stephen Harper. We also know that the Chief Electoral Officer cut a deal over the electoral fraud that took place in 2006, so none of the Conservative Party members who stood to go to jail actually did. And we know that Elections Canada has kept secret the rulings it has made on the 2,982 complaints it has investigated across the last fifteen years.
I am not confident in the will of Elections Canada to properly investigate the electoral fraud of 2011 and apprise Canadians of their findings, so I ask you today to once again call for a fully empowered, transparent public inquiry to delve into this sordid affair and report back on it.
Such a call might have the added benefit of reminding the Conservative Party of the need to conduct everyday parliamentary business according to democratic principles and processes. It seems that every day, they transgress without a whole lot of nuance to it.
Sincerely,

Western Painted Turtle - Chrysemys picta bellii
We found these turtles sunning themselves on a small pond.
The Western Painted Turtle is named after the bright yellow stripes on its head, neck, tail and legs, and the glowing red on its plastron (shell covering the belly) and under-edge of its carapace (shell covering the back).
Most adult Painted Turtles spend the winter hibernating in the mud at the bottom of ponds and lakes. Once temperatures warm up and the ice leaves the water, Painted Turtle courtship begins.
In B.C., Painted Turtles are found in pockets throughout the southern interior, as far north as Golden. This includes the Okanagan Valley, Kamloops Lake, Shuswap Lake, and the Creston and Nelson Area.
At present, the Western Painted Turtle is on the provincial blue list. This means they are considered vulnerable to habitat loss, and susceptible to human and natural disturbances. Habitat is being lost because of pollution and waterway interference due to damming, agriculture, and urbanization of waterfronts.
Wild Clematis in the forest after the rain
Filmed May 4, 2012 at Mission Creek Park...
The Wild Clematis was the first delicate flower we came upon. This one is mauve, but apparently there are also yellow ones. They grow in predominantly shaded areas in the forest, using other trees for structure. They do not have tendrils like most vines.

I Want Our Canada Back . . .
"you won't recognize Canada when I get through with it" ~ SH 2006
After 1 year as a majority, the harper gov't has turned Canada into a "Banana Republic". He warned us "you won't recognize Canada when I get through with it". I don't, and we have 3 more years to go.
I wonder what horrible experience harper had growing up in Canada? What was it that happened to him as a young man growing up in Canada, that he felt he has had to change so radically?
- Was it the availability of jobs that now under the harper gov't, we don't have anymore?
- Was it the guarantee that his parents, grandparents would have OAS for security in their aging years - now cut under the harper gov't?
- Was it the freedom of speech that he certainly took advantage of with his past affiliations and now scientists are gagged and environmentalists are threatened by the harper gov't?
- Was it the ethics and statesmanship of Canadian Politics that he couldn't stand and now we hear $10Billion lies about F35 jets and cooking the accounting books under the harper gov't.
- Was it the patriotism that Canadians felt for our Canada which is now threatened by infusion of American policies & practices & funding with the harper gov't?
- Was it the name of our government which was the Gov't of Canada, but is now the harper gov't as he madated the name change.
- Was it the transparency of gov't where Canadians could follow Parliament and now under the harper gov't most is done behind closed doors and in secrecy?
- Was it our peace-keeping foreign policy and now with the harper gov't we illegally invaded a foreign nation.
- Was it our strong National Security which has been attacked through Election Fraud during this past election and the harper gov't refuses to call for an Independent Inquiry to find the criminals?
- Was it the model Democracy that other nations admired and which today is being eroded as the harper gov't overrides democratic votes and decisions (ie. CWB)
harper grew up in Canada, enjoying all the attributes and opportunities of this great country. And yet in 1 short year, he has made changes that have destroyed that wonderul life that Canada could and did offer. harper got to where he is today, because of how Canada was. How very sad for thousands of Canadians who won't experience the amazing life Canada had prior to the harper gov't.

ACTION: HOLD CANADIAN EXTRACTIVE COMPANIES ACCOUNTABLE
Please copy and email or mail this information.
Cc: bob.rae@parl.gc.ca; Elizabeth.May@parl.gc.ca; thomas.mulcair@parl.gc.ca
Subject: Canadian extractive companies
Importance: High
Dear Prime Minister Harper and Minister Ed Fast:
Almost every day there is news about the behaviour of Canadian extractive companies or their lobbyists in relation to foreign mining exploits.
For instance, just a few days ago I heard how Honduran legislators are seeking input from Canadian experts in the drafting of a new mining law, while at the same time Honduran civil society organizations denounce Honduran authorities for refusing to consult with them. The organizations criticize the proposed law for privileging water supplies for industrial use, for continued promotion of open-pit mining, and for lack of opportunities for meaningful and binding prior consultation with communities about proposed mining operations.
Canadian mining companies are of course very active in Honduras – most notably Goldcorp. Where Goldcorp has one of its’ mines, in the Valle de Siria, the water is now polluted with heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and mercury, and the health of 80 percent of the 42,000 inhabitants has been affected.
No one should be looking towards “Canadian experts” for advice on how to go about mining.
Further, in relation to the quashing of Bill C-300, I reject the Canadian government siding with corporate interests over the interests of people and the environment.
I call upon the Canadian government to enact legislation that would hold Canadian extractive companies accountable for human rights violations and environmental impacts of their mining practices around the world.
I look forward to your response on this matter.
Sincerely,

CBC TV talking hair-do's drive me crazy!
It's the May Day Event World Wide. Millions are out in support of it and also to oppose austerity being forced upon all of us by the 1%.
CBC TV is at Parliament Hill to interview protesters there. Anchor Carole MacNiel on CBC was asking a protester "'why protest' since all reports say Canada came out of the economic downturn of 2008 very well and our economy is doing well?" I had to write to her at CBC ---
Hey Carole,
Just heard you say that Canada, according to all reports is doing better than most, in reference to the economy. You live in a nice bubble.
Just heard you say that Canada, according to all reports is doing better than most, in reference to the economy. You live in a nice bubble.
What are the statistics for food bank use in Canada; is it declining? I guess that 1 million (+ or -) just haven't been told how good things are. Billions spent on decrepit antique subs, new war ships, F35's, G8 & G20 summits and, yes, bank bailouts. It's all good in Canada.
Last week in Walmart I saw an senior woman (easily in her 70's and maybe 80's) pushing a broom around the store; tag said she was Walmart maintenance team. When she left I asked the cashier if she was working because she had to or just to keep busy. Answer: she is a senior and she is single. Single seniors live a life of poverty, and she was working because she HAD to. The cashier also said that this lady was not alone, many single elderly are working because they have to.
I hear of all the Walmart expansions and now Target coming into Canada with jobs. These jobs will not be going to the youth who are getting educated and seek greener and more rewarding pastures than the service industry provides. These jobs will be for the elderly and less advantaged. By the way, in Kelowna, BC the minimum wage is now a whopping $10.25. Try living on that with the high cost of living.
Since the encounter at Walmart I've talked with other people about the issue with seniors being single and a whole new world opened up. Kelowna has many seniors whom I thought they were all doing well. Nothing could be further from the truth.

There's a side to Kelowna that most people are not aware of; a poverty hiding below the glitz's of wineries, golf courses and gated retirement living. Now, thanks to Facebook and posting about this issue I've learned that it is present coast to coast. Single seniors are leaving Alberta. As the cost of living climbs these seniors are looking for more affordable places to locate, and BC is not an option.
Yes if you travel in the circle of the 1% you would think all is well, but if you open your eyes a whole different picture emerges.

Are all charities questioned for alleged partisan politics?
The harper government, as we all know, is stifling
dissenters. The harper government has ordered the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to investigate the
'charitable status' of a great many organizations. This is because, “registered
charities are allowed to devote only a small fraction of their resources to
political activity, although they can never be partisan.1
Bottom line, the harper government will not tolerate any
voices that disagree with his ideology. The Suzuki Foundation has recently been
reported to the CRA by the harper government tentacle, EthicalOil.org. And
where does EthicalOil.org funding come from?
It is time the right wing charities be investigated as well.
"All is fair in love and war".
Please add any right wing charity you are aware of. This

A Nation With Vision!
We the people of Canada wish to serve notice to you; the United States of America, China and the European Union, that we live in a democracy that gives the people of this great nation the ultimate say on whether we will ratify or reject all agreements that have been made with you that have not received the support of at minimum, a Real Majority of all eligible voters in this country!
Stephen Harper, you too are being served notice, that your agreements; whether the Perimeter and Security Agreement, Security and Prosperity Agreement, Free Trade Agreements with other countries that are currently being entered into without full disclosure to the Canadian electorate, will be subject to the acceptance of at least 2/3rds of all sitting Members of the House in a free and unwhipped vote in the next Parliament of Canada! You promote democracy around the world! Canadians will be given a chance to exercise it through the Gathering Will of a Real Majority of the people! We must always accept the judgement of the people, and honour the decisions of the people who make the right decisions provided they are given full disclosure on matters before the nation!
In clear conscience we cannot allow a government which has received only 40% of the popular vote of the people to enforce a mandate that was not clearly communicated to Canadians by the Conservative Party of Canada!
As you are preparing for the next General Election, let it be known that whether we have 308, or 338 federal ridings in the country, there will be one non-partisan Courageous Canadian who will stand in each riding and serve the Will of a Real Majority of his/her constituents, their national Vision and a Mandate of and by Canadians.
You will have a chance to meet them when every seat in the House of Commons will be occupied by men and/or women duly elected, who will take the Stand for our national sovereignty, and deliver the democratic and economic authority to the most important SHAREHOLDERS, every citizen of this great Canadian nation!
The Spirit in this country is what calls us to serve the freedom of Canadians in truth and in justice!
Change is coming!

Ticks are out - Meet the intruder!
Not too much bothers Cindy except for ticks. She felt something on her neck after a hike, saw it a tick and gave it a flick! It landed somewhere on the carpet. DOH!! Meanwhile after vacuuming to try and suck it up, it had not actually flicked, but had stuck on her clothes and once again she felt it on my neck!! I rescued the tick! lol Meet the intruder!
Spring is tick is season of the tick. This one came home with us from our trip up to Myra Canyon. These little things pose a danger to humans and animals.
Ticks feed on blood by attaching to animals or people with their mouth parts. Females are a little larger than males and when they're full of blood can be as big as a grape. Younger tick life stages are smaller and, when unfed, are lighter in colour. People and pets can pick up ticks by brushing against vegetation.
Lyme disease is an illness caused by the bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, which can be spread through the bite of certain types of ticks. Lyme disease in humans can have serious symptoms but can be effectively treated. Lyme disease has been reported in parts of Europe, Asia, and throughout much of North America.

Earth Day 2012 Jamaica - Fire Water and Who's the owner of the oil
Unethical Oil...who owns it? Wars are fought over it. Who's the owner of the oil?
It's funny that super powers fight wars for oil. Sometimes the population of a country is enslaved by corrupt governments, oil companies and foreign intervention, while forgetting that small nations that do not have oil reserves cannot afford to pay the ever increasing price of oil.
This fire water is in Jamaica, near Runaway Bay, owned by Kevin. While here, we were treated to Kevin's friend reciting 'Dove Peotry' for us.
VOTER FRAUD COURT CASE - CANADA ELECTION 41
Dear Friends,
Voting Matters.
Whether it's Election Day in our community or a vote in Parliament or City Hall, every legal vote must count.
Last year, something went wrong during our federal election. As we have read in the papers and seen on the news, many Canadians, Etobians included, were targeted with lies and dirty tricks, as bad actors attempted to rig our election. Sometimes voters were misled and misdirected so as to take away their right to vote. In other cases, the voting at polls was disrupted.
In Etobicoke Centre, among other things, it is possible that some people voted twice.
Last June, to get to the truth, I took on the fight for our democratic rights. Using my own resources, I challenged last year's election results in Ontario's courts.
On Monday, April 23, the case I have brought forward on behalf of the people of Etobicoke Centre, and all Canadians, will be heard commencing at 10:00 a.m. in Court Room 806, 393 University Ave., Toronto.

Earth Day 2012 - United States
What better day to explore . . .
Earth Day is perfect for checking out some of the unique features of the USA. We traveled around the US for nearly 6 weeks and more than 10,000 miles an found an amazingly diverse and beautiful country.
Sadly as is much of our Earth, the USA is also facing huge challenges as the environment takes a back seat to momentary monetary opportunities. The environment is the most valuable asset we have so preserving it is a no brainier.

Earth Day 2012
Dear Earth,
We had a great day celebrating you but to be honest I don't just want a one day stand. I would like us to come together and form a long lasting relationship where we love one another, appreciate what we have and form a bond that transcends time.
Your humble guest.
It should be Earth Year.
Our world is too unique and precious to just celebrate it one day out of a year. If you look around and see all the beauty then it's easy to understand why we all have to work together to save Mother Earth and make it better then previous generations.
All forms and manner of pollutants in the sea, on the land and in our air is threatening animals, nature and us humans.
music by Smiley 73 01 - Cry Freedom
Our earth is unique
As far as we know there is no life on any other planet close to Earth. That makes the biodiversity and beauty of life on our Earth all the more important.
The hoover fly at the end of the video was one of those 'being at the right place at the right time' things. Filmed at 240fps with Sony HDRAX2000.

I know it won't be easy. You are beautiful with a lot of treasure that unscrupulous suitors will try to take. They will abuse you at every opportunity; treat you with no respect as their personal playground. Others are willing to rape you for their own shortsighted gains, but as long as I can, I will stand by you, fight for you, because together the future is better for both you dear earth, and me.

Fascism, Corporatism or Harperism?
“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power”

Stephen Harper has sold out Canada and Canadians
. . . and continues to do so.
Harper wants Canada in the Pacific Rim Trading Agreement. Without doubt, our agriculture is going to be impacted, and in the long term Canada will take a hit on being food independent.
China's solution:
To super-size its supply by snapping up millions of live animals raised by U.S. farmers as breeding stock - capitalizing on decades of cutting edge agricultural research in America.
"By taking this step, say breeders and exporters, China will move from small-scale backyard farms, to the Westernized tradition of large consolidated operations to keep up with demand."
Opinion by Joe C Vass
Free trade and globalization works to the benefit of China and China has a take no prisoner attitude in trade.
When I was young one of the signs that Christmas was approaching was the arrival of Japanese mandarin oranges. Our family would buy boxes and boxes. Today we still buy mandarins at Christmas, but the mandarin oranges are now from China. China came, they saw and they conquered.
China marches forward
One industry after another has collapsed as the Chinese economy marches forward. The willing capitalists - who embrace the short term opportunity of making cash - will find themselves the victims of long lasting enslavement.
When markets are surrendered to China they are at the mercy of China. Things in politics are not complex if there's an ounce of intelligence in politicians, along with the determination to do the right thing, rather than the short term goal of fattening their corporate overlords. Remember how many business leaders Harper took to China?

Could relations with China be a threat to National Security?
The US is now in the process of selling out it's food source for short term gains to China. We should have already learned about this kind of one dimensional trade from the sale of apples to China.
First China bought our apples, then they grew the trees on a scale we cannot match and now juice and other apple products are imported from China.

China's pursuit -
Innovation and efficiency:
China will import a technology or create a joint-venture; learn the best practices, apply those practices at a lower cost than overseas rivals and emerge as an aggressive competitor in the global market.
