We need to take action re: OMNIBUS CRIME BILL C-10 which is in the Senate right now!

Take action re: OMNIBUS CRIME BILL C-10 which is in the Senate right now!

The Canadian Psychological Association has made a submission to the Senate as have the Canadian Bar Association, representing over 37,000 lawyers across the country.

The fact is . . .

". . . considering that Canada already has some of the safest streets and communities in the world and a declining crime rate. This bill will do nothing to improve that state of affairs but, through its overreach and overreaction to imaginary problems, Bill C-10 could easily make it worse. It could eventually create the very problems it’s supposed to solve." (thestar.com ’10 reasons to oppose Bill C-10’)

How the Canadian Bar sees this Bill . . .

The Canadian Bar Association, representing over 37,000 lawyers across the country, has identified 10 reasons why the passage of Bill C-10 will be a mistake and a setback for Canada:

1. Ignoring reality. Decades of research and experience have shown what actually reduces crime: (a) addressing child poverty, (b) providing services for the mentally ill and those afflicted with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, (c) diverting young offenders from the adult justice system, and (d) rehabilitating prisoners, and helping them to reintegrate into society. Bill C-10 ignores these proven facts.

2. Rush job. Instead of receiving a thorough review, Bill C-10 is being rushed through Parliament purely to meet the “100-day passage” promise from the last election. Expert witnesses attempting to comment on more than 150 pages of legislation in committee hearings are cut off mid-sentence after just five minutes.

3. Spin triumphs over substance. The federal government has chosen to take a “marketing” approach to Bill C-10, rather than explaining the facts to Canadians. This campaign misrepresents the bill’s actual content and ensures that its public support is based heavily on inaccuracies.

4. No proper inspection. Contrary to government claims, some parts of Bill C-10 have received no previous study by parliamentary committee. Other sections have been studied before and were changed — but, in Bill C-10, they’re back in their original form.

5. Wasted youth. More young Canadians will spend months in custodial centres before trial, thanks to Bill C-10. Experience has shown that at-risk youth learn or reinforce criminal behaviour in custodial centres; only when diverted to community options are they more likely to be reformed.

6. Punishments eclipse the crime. The slogan for one proposal was Ending House Arrest for Serious and Violent Criminals Act, but Bill C-10 will actually also eliminate conditional sentences for minor and property offenders and instead send those people to jail. Is roughly $100,000 per year to incarcerate someone unnecessarily a good use of taxpayers’ money?

7. Training predators. Bill C-10 would force judges to incarcerate people whose offences and circumstances clearly do not warrant time in custody. Prison officials will have more latitude to disregard prisoners’ human rights, bypassing the least restrictive means to discipline and control inmates. Almost every inmate will re-enter society someday. Do we want them to come out as neighbours, or as predators hardened by their prison experience?

8. Justice system overload. Longer and harsher sentences will increase the strains on a justice system already at the breaking point. Courts and Crown prosecutors’ offices are overwhelmed as is, legal aid plans are at the breaking point, and police forces don’t have the resources to do their jobs properly. Bill C-10 addresses none of these problems and will make them much worse.

9. Victimizing the most vulnerable. With mandatory minimums replacing conditional sentences, people in remote, rural and northern communities will be shipped far from their families to serve time. Canada’s aboriginal people already represent up to 80 per cent of inmates in institutions in the Prairies, a national embarrassment that Bill C-10 will make worse.

10. How much money? With no reliable price tag for its recommendations, there is no way to responsibly decide the bill’s financial implications. What will Canadians sacrifice to pay for these initiatives? Will they be worth the cost?

Canadians deserve accurate information about Bill C-10, its costs and its effects. This bill will change our country’s entire approach to crime at every stage of the justice system. It represents a huge step backwards; rather than prioritizing public safety, it emphasizes retribution above all else. It’s an approach that will make us less safe, less secure, and ultimately, less Canadian.
Trinda L. Ernst is president of the Canadian Bar Association.” (thestar.com ’10 reasons to oppose Bill C-10’)

My Concerns Regarding Omnibus Crime Bill C-10

Dear Senators,

I am writing to you because I am deeply concerned about the Omnibus Crime Bill, Bill C-10, as it ignores the extensive evidence about how we can achieve our shared goal of making our communities safer.
I am writing because our Senate can provide the sober second thought that we need now.
I am writing to ask you to carefully explore the evidence, listen to diverse voices, and make thoughtful changes to this bill that will make Canada safer, not meaner.

I ask that the Senate take the time necessary to review all of the evidence and talk to the experts. Many respected experts and organizations are profoundly concerned about this bill. Let's learn from the experiences of places that have tried this punishment-focused approach to justice, like Texas, which have seen it fail completely.

Bill C-10 has been rushed through the House of Commons without proper attention to its costs, consequences, and the legitimate concerns of our provinces, First Nations and countless other individuals, organizations and experts.

I ask that you ensure that the diverse interests of the provinces, the particular needs of Quebec, and the stated interests of Aboriginal people who are currently disproportionately represented in our prisons, are given a full and fair hearing.

If Bill C-10 proceeds unchanged, it would radically shift Canadian justice away from prevention and rehabilitation, and towards punishment and exclusion, at a massive social and financial cost.
I ask that the Senate take the time necessary to review all of the bill's consequences, and consider positive alternatives that are proven to reduce crime.

I ask that you refrain from passing this bill until a reasonable estimation of cost is attached to this bill.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,

Beach walk to Nohoch Kay Mahahual - Costa Maya Mexico YouTube

This is Mahahual, Qintana Roo Mexico. This is WHY I didn't want to come home . . .

Mahahual in Quintana Roo, Mexico is the most idyllic and beautiful tropical destination we have visited. It has the laid beck atmosphere that bring it as close to paradise as you can find although when the cruise ships are in port Mahaual gets busy. It just doesn't matter, it's beautiful and perhaps the thing that adds to this beauty the most and grips at the heart is the great people that live here. We met many of the locals like Brenda.

Wake up Canada - New World Order Has Arrived

The Harper government is about to implement sweeping changes to the internet, specifically allowing police and government to spy on Canadians without warrants.

Lawful Access, a series of Tory bills, will force Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to collect and disclose information (name, address, email address) about customers (you and me) to law enforcement (cops and bureaucrats) without a warrant or judicial oversight. And will unleash sweeping warrant powers for police over online communication (emails, Facebook, chat rooms).

At the Davos meeting of the elite and government leaders the validity of capitalist system is being questioned, with that the democratic system of governance must also be questioned.

How can democracy function when governments represent the elite, uber rich, corporations and lobbyists often in contradiction to the wishes and needs of their populace. Capitalism has failed, more correctly it's been corrupted  just as democracy has.

The New World Order has come home to roost.

Hello BC, beautiful as you are, there are big, I mean really BIG problems.

Crime is often overlooked but whether it's drugs, gangs, B&E's, assaults, robberies, we have serious issues. Four days after Xmas 2011 - 4 murders. And let's all not forget the 'Highway of Tears' between Prince George and Prince Rupert where up to 43 girls and women have been murdered or have disappeared.

Nov 24, 2011 -- With nearly 140000 kids growing up in poverty in B.C., the province has among the worst child poverty.  The proportion of B.C. children living in poverty has risen, marking the eighth straight year that the province has claimed the highest after-tax rate in the country.

Property prices - The quarterly report says detached bungalows in Vancouver were especially expensive, with the cost of mortgages payments, utilities and property taxes equivalent to 92.5 per cent of a typical household's monthly income. That's up 10.4 percentage points from the previous quarter.

BC has natural beauty but if you travel you can find many places also full of natural beauty, it takes more than that to make a place - the best place on Earth, and in quality of life for hundreds of thousands of our population we fall short.

'Capitalism... no longer fits the world around us' - Davos - YouTube HD

Davos Confronts Crisis Over Western Capitalism
Instead of opening with its usual session on the economic forecast for the year ahead, this year's World Economic Forum at Davos started off with debates on the future of Western capitalism.
In the midst of escalating eurozone debt crisis and increasing disparities between the rich and the poor, experts from across the globe asserted that the historic motors of the 20th century global economy will have to reform or die.
Some went as far to contend that state capitalism on the Chinese model is in the ascendency.

Lobster Fishermen of the Caribbean - Banco Chinchorro Mexico - YouTube HD

Just a few hours south of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, life for the fishermen of Banco Chinchorro continues much as it always has. It was a special treat to spend even a little time with these fishermen and seeing a way of life that could disappear in the near future.
Many of the fishermen are older and there were no young fishermen to be seen learning this time intensive and sustainable form of fishing. That's a pity, for this might not be the most glamorous life, or give the biggest financial reward but there is more to life than that.
Getting up in the morning in this magical place and spending the day on the water, moving at your pace, at one with the elements has rewards that can't be measured by monetary gains.

Night with the fishermen - Banco Chinchorro Adventure Travel - YouTube HD

What a place. Right on the water, crocodile under the house, hammock to sleep in, batteries for electricity and an outhouse. Loved it. This is Banco Chinchorro, Mexico!

When the sun went down it was quiet except for the odd fishing boat returning late, amazing they could navigate around in the dark, and the stars up above, it was unforgettable.

We dined on fresh fried fish, slept in the same home that the Discovery Channel crew used a little before our arrival and yes we had the croc outside. No late night swimming, btw there were also sharks cruising around.

Incredible Beauty of Banco Chinchorro at Sunset - YouTube HD

We started around 1pm with a boat ride to Banco Chinchorro, stopping for a short swim in what can be best described as a living aquarium, a tour of the island and meeting people dedicated to the preservation of this amazing place, followed by meeting local fishermen and seeing some of the salt water crocodiles.

But our day wasn't done yet, time for a sunset tour of the mangroves and some up-close encounter with frigate birds.
Our day still isn't done yet...

There is so much beauty all around us that at times it can be overwhelming. I will continue to show the beauty of our world and be a vocal advocate for our environment, planet earth, our home.

2012 Mayan vs Alien - YouTube Discovery

What if? And now for something completely different...
One of the strangest mysteries in archaeology was discovered in the Diquis Delta of Costa Rica. Since the 1930s, hundreds of stone balls have been documented, ranging in size from a few centimetres to over two meters in diameter. Some weigh 16 tons. Almost all of them are made of granodiorite, a hard, igneous stone. These objects are monolithic sculptures made by human hands.

Skulls are humanity's foremost symbol of death, and a powerful icon in the visual vocabularies of cultures all over the globe.
Many strangely "deformed" hominoid skulls have been discovered in Mexico and Peru. One of them, the Starchild skull found in Mexico, is currently the subject of scientific scrutiny and DNA testing.
Thirteen crystal skulls of apparently ancient origin have been found in parts of Mexico, Central America and South America, comprising one of the most fascinating subjects of 20th Century archaeology.
In the 1930's, in a small rural village 100 miles southwest of Chihuahua, Mexico,
at the back of a mine tunnel, two mysterious remains were found: a complete human skeleton and a smaller, malformed skeleton.

In late February of 1999, Lloyd Pye was first shown the Starchild skull by its owners. Nameless then, it was a highly anomalous skull. He initially felt it would prove to be a rare genetic deformity of some kind. This skull's symmetry was astonishing, even more so than the average human. In fact, all of its bones—most of which had human counterparts—were beautifully shaped. But shaped like what? Solving many questions that this unusual skull presented became his challenge.
Nazca (Nasca) Lines
Nazca Lines are the most outstanding group of geoglyphs in the world. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand about 300 hundred figures made of straight lines, geometric shapes and pictures of animals and birds - and their patterns are only clearly visible from the air.

Teotihuacan
At its peak around 500-600 A.D., Teotihuacan contained perhaps 200,000 people. It was a well planned city covering nearly eight square miles and larger and more advanced than any European city of the time. Its civilization was contemporary with that of ancient Rome , and lasted longer - more than 500 years.
TIAHUANACO ( TIWANAKU)
Tiahuanacu (also called Tiwanaku) is a mystery because of its age (estimated to be 17,000 years) and the peculiar stone technology. Today there is little doubt that Tiahuanaco was a major sacred ceremonial centre and focal point of a culture that spread across much of the region. The ancient people built a stone pyramid known as the Akapana.

Adventure Travel 2 - Banco Chinchorro, Mexico

Although we were told that the crocodiles will jump for their dinner, the fishermen feeding this big guy were still sitting on their decks, dangling their legs over the water!!!

Our travel continued after a brief stop for some snorkeling in what can only be described as a living aquarium. First look at the Banco Chincharro fishermen's home on stilts with a large salt water crocodile free and wild, feeding between the homes.  This is not a tourist area in it's strictest sense, you must make prior arrangements to stay in one of the fishermen homes  so it was a real honor that we were going to experience this.  Latter we found out that the Discovery Channel had a film crew here and they also stayed in the same home that we occupied. Our travel arrangements were prepared by the Port of Costa Maya.

Adventure Travel Banco Chinchorro Mexico YouTube HD

Weather decides if you get to Banco Chinchorro . . . we lucked out! Our trip was cancelled 1 day only!! I've never had snorkeling like this EVER!!! It was a rough day, so it's a bit bumpy . . .

Our most adventuresome travel was like stepping back in time as we traveled 34km off shore from Mahahual Costa Maya to a small fishing village at Banco Chinchorro. Things haven't changed much here over the decades, but technology has arrived as some of the fisherman homes on stilts sport satellite TV and the fishermen are using a more labor and time intensive method of catching lobster live for transport to sea food restaurants around the world.

Banco Chinchorro is an atoll reef lying off the southeast coast of the Municipality of Othón P. Blanco in Quintana Roo, Mexico, near Belize that is one of the world's premiere shipwreck diving spots. Its beauty is gorgeously showcased throughout the 2009 semi-documentary film "Alamar" by Pedro González-Rubio.
The reef, which lies in Mexican waters 35 km offshore in the Caribbean Sea, is about 80 km east of the city of Chetumal,is approximately 40.2 kilometres (25.0 mi) long from north to south, and approximately 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) wide at its widest point. It covers an area of 800 km². The atoll has three islands, with an aggregate land area of 6.7 km.

The natural vegetation of the islands is largely mangrove near the shore shading into open woodland more than 20--30 m from the shore. There is a cayman reserve on the southernmost (and biggest) island. The islands (in common with many isolated tropical islands) are thickly populated with small crabs, which are tame and so easily trodden on inadvertently by visitors.

Some of the islands are inhabited by fishermen, who live in dwellings on stilts about 60-100 m offshore to subvert local regulations forbidding private construction.

Caribbean Reef Squid - Sepioteuthis sepioidea - YouTube HD

Most people who love nature and wildlife have heard stories of animal/human encounters that indicate some form of communication between 2 alien species. I recently watched on TV as people in a boat came up to a whale entangled in a fishing net, the whale was tired, nearly death and it let the boat get close enough for the people to cut it free. Then seeming to thank the people the whale breached several time before swimming off.

The Caribbean reef squid encounter had a profound effect on us, no they are not whales or dolphins but looking into their eyes, seeing the movements and changes in color leaves no doubt in me that they were trying to communicate.
